Joint ELSMOR-TANDEM workshop to be held in Brussels on the 6th and 7th of December 2022

The two Horizon 2020 projects will be joining forces to organise a joint workshop to bring forward the research done in ELSMOR and to pass the torch forward to TANDEM while also giving an overview of the status of Small Modular Reactor (SMR) development in Europe. SMRs are going to be a part of the European energy system and will bring considerable opportunities to it in both power and heat production. But to realise these opportunities fully, Europe will also have to prepare and ensure we’re ready to utilise these
developments.

The event will be held over 2 days at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Brussels on the 6th and 7th of December. The first day will focus on the high level messages of SMRs. What are different parties doing to drive forward nuclear policy, what are the views of nuclear utilities and why should non-nuclear utilities or industrial users be interested in SMRs? Come join us in discussing how SMRs can support EU’s turn towards decarbonisation and what is needed for that to happen.

The second day (7.12) will go deeper into the results of the ELSMOR project and how to utilize the learnings from it for TANDEM over 5 different workshops. The ELSMOR project has for the past 3 years focused on analysing and evaluating the various safety aspects of SMR designs to ensure that the European nuclear community would have both the tools and the knowhow
for licensing these plants. TANDEM will move further from this and will study the role SMRs will have in our energy systems analysing their role and economics when it comes to the production of electricity, heat and hydrogen while also ensuring there will be no safety related hurdles in any of these use cases.

Workshops for Day 2 (7.12)

Further workshop details are being prepared, feedback on areas of interest of participants are also welcome and can be taken into account.

  • Defence in Depth of LW-SMRs
    •  Presentations and discussion on the application of defence-in-depth principles for LW-SMRs with a focus on how issues arising from SMR concepts such as modularity of the plant and severe accident management can be treated inside the framework.
  • SMR Dataset
    • The ELSMOR project built a virtual dataset of a PWR SMR to function as the basis of the safety analysis simulations performed in the project. This dataset will also be available to other researchers outside the project and the workshop will go through the dataset, showcase it’s usability and allow for discussion on further usage and development.
  • Experimental facilities on passive safety systems
    •   Presentations and discussion on the plate heat exchanger test rig built at SIET for analysing the passive safety systems of SMRs.
  • Modelling of passive safety systems
    •  Presentations and discussion on the modelling work performed on the passive safety systems of a LW-SMR, the challenges found while performing the work, the implications of the results and the basis these create for further safety analysis work.
  • Workshop on TANDEM
    • TBA
