TANDEM joins IAEA conference on Small Modular Reactors

During the week of 21 October 2024, the IAEA organised its first ever International Conference dedicated to Small Modular Reactors and their Applications. The purpose of this conference was to provide an international forum for a broad range of stakeholder to discuss progress in this arena and identify opportunities, challenges and enabling conditions for the accelerated development and safe & secure deployment of SMRs.

This event was an overwhelming success, gathering more than 1300 people in person participants and over 1100 online, representing 95 Member States and 17 international organisations. 44 technical sessions were organised throughout the week, in addition to various side events. Participants had the opportunity to engage with representatives from industrials, TSOs, nuclear safety authorities, RTOs, universities, start-ups, as well as experts from other Euratom projects and the IAEA.

The conference also provided an excellent opportunity to present the TANDEM project and share some of the work undertaken and lessons learnt as follows:

  • Giorgio Simonini (EDF) presented the TANDEM open-source library.
  • Guido Masotti (EDF) presented an illustration of a hybrid energy system simulator using the TANDEM library.
  • Claire Vaglio-Gaudard (CEA) provided an overview of the project.
  • Kateryna Piliuhina and Gabriel Pavel (ENEN) presented a poster about their contribution to the development of human resources for SMRs, highlighting their activities within the TANDEM project.
